Digital camera movie question

Post by ambientlive » Tue Oct 17, 2006 5:54 pm

I'm trying to get 'movie' files off my digital camera (Fuji something) so I can use them as backdrop for live playing.
The files come over to the PC fine, as .MOV files.
But my software (Sony Vegas) will not recognise these.
Does anybody know a freeware method please, to convert them to a more useable format such as .MPG or .WMV or .AVI

Thanks, John

Go download this tool:

It's defacto. There isn't a format that I've come across that this thing hasn't been able to handle extrenely well. It's got a billion options and may be overwhelming at first but take your time and you'll be dandy.

You could also tell your camera not to compile the videos in MOV, and use the AVI format instead...

Yes I'm checking the "manual" to see if that can be done

Vegas should recognise them, just drag 'em into the media pool.
Though if they're mpeg2 you might have a problem.
You could try http://www.avid.com/freedv/ as its native format is Qt.
Though its interface is totally different to Vegas.
Its a basic editor but has most of the features that vegas ahs except its limited to 2 or 3 video tracks, and I'm not sure how many audio.
Cheers

Nope, Vegas says "None of the files dropped on Vegas could be opened" and "An error occurred while opening one or more files. The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialised"

To me that reads as the bottom-default message since it's so broad. Vegas 5.0

MOV extension files are Quicktime format, an enemy of Windows machines. It's possible you might be able to import them if you had Quicktime 6.5 or higher on your computer. Even programs that support Quicktime import or conversion require it to be installed separately. Go to the Sony site or read the manual about this. If that doesn't work and Vegas is QT deficient, then:

You'll need to use a better Editing program like Adobe Premiere or a Conversion program to turn them into AVI files. There are two inexpensive programs that do a great job I own:

Canopus Procoder Express - $60 scaled down version of their expensive program that makes anything out of anything. Great even for making VBR MPG2 files for DVD.

Cinema Craft CCE Basic - $58 does all the basic stuff.

Good luck- Dan

I used procoder a lot on my last Freelance gig and it'll do ALMOST any format you need
Some things a rea wee bit unreliable but otherwise ok.
Try upgrading to QT7 and see what happens.
Though if they're mpeg-2 files you'll still need a converter.

there is a link at the bottom of the page that says "Download".. not a very well made page I agree though as it's hard to see.

The link points to this page:
http://www.erightsoft.net/S7f01.html

At the bottom of that page there are a number of download locations listed.

I should send them an email or something... the pages are a pain to navigate.
