external audio thru a microKorg

Post by dr.sine » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:38 pm

i want to put my guitar thru my microkorg. the only progress i'v made was getting hear just a clean tone thru it. i want to just select a saved patch, plug my guitar into it, and play just my guitar while using the osc's and lfo's of the synth. it's been a while since i'v messed with it, but i think i may have got it so that i could put my guitar thru the patch but couldnt get sound without holding a key down.

what to do, oh, what to do?
My mind doth rove of its own accord.

As I understand it, you can't really effect a signal with its oscs (other than lfos).
You can affect external audio with its filters and use amplitude modulators (envs, lfos etc) and use the onboard effects, but you can't do anything related to the pitch of that signal.
In a regular synth program you can use the guitar signal as osc 1 and mix that with a waveform from osc 2, but that is of limited usefulness, to me anyway. Maybe you can get creative with it.
You can use the arpeggiator latch so you don't have to hold keys down while trying to play the guitar.
You can also use it with vocoder patches so the guitar would be the equivalent of the mic input. -- Also a three handed proposition unless you use the latch function, slow the tempo way down and turn the gate time way up.

Hope this helps.

i'm a dumb a*s. i knew you couldnt use the osc's. i didnt know you could use the guitar as an osc, and you said mix it with the waves from the #2 osc? might need to explain that a bit more to me. i never even thought about using the arp. latch! thats a right fine idea! but yeah, i want to put my guitar thru the FILTERS, LFO's and onboard effects. yeah...that's what i meant. lol. and i want to do it without needing 3-5 hands. but hey that's where the latch comes in i guess. possibly, are there any other ways to achieve a signal and sound thru the microkorg without having to hold down keys?

You would select the audio in as the "wave" for osc 1 and a different one for osc 2. By mixing the two I meant only mixing the loudness of them in relation to eachother. It's really not as cool as It sounds in my first reply.
Ocs 2 would be playing the pitched notes that you play on the kb or arp and whatever is coming through the audio in would go through at the same time. It won't combine the two waveforms like a ring mod or anything like that.

It might be easier to manage if you pre-recorded some guitar stuff and played that through the MK while you fiddle with the settings. You could loop some phrases or something.
You could run a sequencer into it playing one looooooooooong note to keep the sound coming through as well. Just an idea.

....

my best solution to this is.

gr-1 -> microKorg.

solves all my guitar issues, and about 12 frets worth of my bass issues.

you can do some neat stuff with it...and if you get the arpeggiator going on 1 or 2 of the timbres....you can do some nice stuff..

works way better with a guitar though....

setup for the bass put me back...180 for the gr1 and 180 i think for the bass pickup..

alternatively...

use the the gr-1 to trigger the microKorg's amp...then run the clean guitar signal into the audio in...and
yeah ...access to filters...etc.

gr-1...ROMtastic..
...simply put..

go to arp menu 1 - select 100 for note length and trg (trigger) for arp pattern. make sure all 8 steps are lit.
go to arp menu 2 - turn latch on.

this just sounds one (or 2 or 3 or 4) continuous tones in a drone like fashion.

try running hte guitar through some pedals then into the mk.
