How to repair a data wheel?

Post by square_bubblegum » Thu Jan 25, 2007 2:45 am

Hi,

the Data wheel on my Roland D2 is starting to wobble when it is turned, and gets less and less precise in its functioning.
Is there a technique to repair data wheels?

thank you

Sometimes, all that's needed is to tighten the top nut (underneath the plastic wheel). The shaft become lose and the friction is no longer good. But the contact might be worn out.

Roland's pot is not as they used to be (forget the 20 year lifespan). They die relatively fast now and needed to be changed. Usually, the value is printed underneath (or on the side, depending of the manufacturer) the pot. If not, test it with a multimeter set to "Ohm".

Call Roland. You would surprised what they still have in stock for parts and my experience with their parts ppl was excellent. The person I talked to helped me fins specs on a fader for my Juno 60 and amazingly they still had parts available for it (just not he one I needed). I know somone who bought CPU's for TR-606s in the last couple of years in the UK and being so close to Japan, chances are they have what you need.

I suspect that the part you a looking for is an digital encoder, not a potentiometer

I meant encoder. Sorry about that. I guess I'm getting tired, I'm starting to confuse terms.

Yes, Roland might have them (why not since the D2 is somehow recent). But Online suppliers like Mouser, Digikey, etc, also carry encoders. And quite probably cheaper than Roland's. Not sure though because I have not check this out.

Once again, sorry for the wrong teminology.
