basic sounds on yamaha DX9

Post by poor_drummer » Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:10 pm

Hello,

can anyone help out with programing basic stuff on a DX9:

Basic ratios between 2 operators linked in a line ( = carrier + modulator).

For example: CAR set to 1.00 (coarse tune) and MOD to 3.50 (coarse..) gives a bell sound (with the right env. setting of course).

0.50 and 1.75 will yield the same sound (octave lower)
2.00 and 7.00 will be an octave higher..

Various Lead sounds? Strings? Other interesting ideas..

Thanks,

drummer

HI drummer.
It depends a lot of Operator Output level too. Try to tweak this for different sounds.
FM programming is a little hard to work with. I would start first with different algorythms and how the connections between ops-mods can determine the final sound.
Roland Promars, E-mu EMAX and some other machines...

Honestly I would just devote a day off to just play with the various parameters. I had a DX7 and regret the day I sold it.

What I have to say I posted already here:

I almost bought a DX9 from my school (this is a long time ago)—they weren't using it any more. But for some reason I didn't in the end. I like how they look similar to the DX7.

If you haven't done this already, a read through the SoundOnSound Synth Secrets series might prove helpful
Part 12 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr00/a ... ecrets.htm
Part 13 http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may00/a ... /synth.htm

When you're done with those, go back and read the whole series. It's a little basic in the beginning, but I guarantee you'll learn something.

All that said, I agree with Media. Spending a day or two fiddling with it is probably the best way to understand how any given parameter will effect the sound.

The output level of the modulator is hugely important, as it acts as a kind of "filter" for harmonics. Low levels throttles harmonics (more muffled), full level is all harmonics (sharp, nasty sound). The output level for carrier only sets the general volume of the set.

You only EVER hear the Carriers in a sound (the operators at the bottom). Operators above the carrier affect the timbre in various ways.
