Roland TR-909 Help
Got a bit of a problem, Today when recording my 909 into logic I noticed that when recording the bass drum on to a mono channel that the top part of the waveform (when I zoomed out) looked almost horizontal as if just the top had been compressed.
I thought it might have been something to do with my mixer so to be sure took a jack to BD straight to my sound card.... Still the same prob
I can email the waveform if it helps
Do you think something is up with the 909 and can it be fixed??
Tried the HH's and the waveform on these looked normal
Any help would be great
Thanks
Mark

This is perfectly normal.mark andrews wrote:Got a bit of a problem, Today when recording my 909 into logic I noticed that when recording the bass drum on to a mono channel that the top part of the waveform (when I zoomed out) looked almost horizontal as if just the top had been compressed.

Most 909's have 25ms flat before the decay starts.
It's the (one of) reason that the 909 kick sounds so powerfull.

Are you talking about an amplitude waveform, or an oscillator waveform here?
The 909 kick audio wave in my limited experience resembles a clipped sine or a slightly rounded square, whichever way you want to look at it. And yes, that wave is symmetrical. A wave to show volume would only be positive-going, and would show an initial peak followed by a tail-off. Maybe a picture would be useful.

Looks like maybe the caps are getting a bit old and aren't supplying enough voltage for a full swing on the output section.
The important thing though is how does it sound? If it sounds good there's no problem. A lot of what's called 'vintage warmth' is things not quite working like they did when they were new, you fix it and then you lose your vintage sound.
I wouldn't worry about what it looks like unless the sound is giving you problems.

Are your soundcard inputs set to accept a +4 dbu signal or -10 dbu signal ?
