When you boot up do you see that your processor is running at 3.4ghz?

If it's not it may be if it's a new motherboard you have set the CPU multiplyer to the appropriate number in the BIOS (or sometimes even with switches on the mainboard) to get the chip operating at the right speed. Try going into the BIOS (press Delete on start up) and load optimized defaults.

Also did you install your mainboard drivers? Are you using onboard sound or a soundcard? You're not using Vista are you?

Assuming the whole works was replaced (motherboard, cpu, etc) was the OS (I'm assuming Windows 2000 or XP) reloaded fresh, or did you/they just take the drive out of the old system and pop it into the new one and expect everything to be better?

Also, any new software installed that's running constantly? Virus scan, "internet security suite", etc?

What sound card are you using? Assuming something decent, have you disabled any onboard sound in the BIOS/firmware?

If it's a PATA drive, are you using 80-pin cables to go to the hard drive, or is it possible that it got swapped with a 40-pin cable from the CDROM during the upgrade?

Its great to have this info from you guys
okay

I'm not running Vista ( and probably wont for some time )
my sound card/audio device is an X station 61
there was a lot of updates and a copy of AVG installed
the OS was Xp installed twice to get it booting up

Maybe optimise motherboard inthe bios could work but would the performance of the motherboard
affect cpu performance

Thanks guys i'll get back to you soon

(did I miss anything ? )

Keep in mind that windows will often NOT automatically install the drivers for your main board or your USB controllers, and that USB 2.0 support is not even in XP until it is uprgraded to service pack 2. If you're USB is running slower than it should, (realtime audio requires a great deal of bandwidth) this could be causing the stuttering.

Make sure that you install any of the drivers (besides onboard audio) that are on the CD that came with the mainboard, and you run windows update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the latest service pack.

That machine should blast your celeron away.

Make sure your VST host or any program uses the asio driver of your sound interface.

use CPU-Z, a freeware from www.cpuid.com to check what's your processor installed. It will show you how fast are the memory modules configured. Look at mine:

Open task manager to check if the CPU use reaches its top. Make sure there's no application using 100% of it.

There was a bug in explorer.exe (not Internet explorer, but the windows shell) that made use 100% of the CPU after you opened a folder with lots of videos in it.

Drivers are a must, http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3 ... odelmenu=1

check if you have hyperthreading enabled, another must.
