Must Dust Bust

Post by BadTeeth » Wed May 30, 2007 5:40 am

Fellas i am curious to know how everyone on here manages the dust issue?

I don't have enough cash to afford lovely cases for all my synths or equiment and when i see pics of everyones studios on here the lack of dust is startling.
Are you all hoover experts or do you prefer something Christo-esque?
Also.. how do large studios manage this issue?

Would appreciate any advice you guys have,

BAdteef

i just take a damp paper towel to them every few weeks to keep dust from building up. that and i usually give everything a thorough cleaning inside and out when i buy it.

i would imagine large/pro studios have expensive filtration systems installed with the hvac, so dust won't be an issue for them.

Eliminate the source. Pets, fireplace/woodburner, furnace, kids, sweaters, ashtrays, etc. After that its pretty much Swiffer/Dyson. Beats the heck out of cleaning your dusty gear. Afaik, pro studios tend to have multiple doors between the outside and the gear.

I live in a really dusty place (On a dirt road) and I have three dogs and two kids and my gear is nearly dust free.

The stuff all lives in a room in the basement of my house that has a door on it, which I keep closed. There's also a window I open very rarely. I run an ordinary room HEPA air purifier in there 24/7. It cost about $30 and the replacement cartridges are about $10. I replace them whenever they get dirty looking, which is only about once or twice a year. In case something does happen to get dusty, I have a synthetic feather duster thing I got at an auto parts store (meant for dusting the interior of a car).

This is the kind of purifier I'm talking about

My synths are also covered up with simple fabric covers made for me by my wife as a birthday gift. They are just a single layer of fabric and are not too hard to sew, so anyone with minimal skills could make some for you, perhaps also as a gift. She insists on measuring the individual synths and trying to make the covers form-fitting, but I'd honestly rather she just made them in more generic sizes to fit over 37 key synths and 61 key synths, etc. Mine are black fabric with bright colored chili pepper graphics on them since I really like hot peppers.

When I go down there to play with the stuff I just take the covers off whatever I am going to use and put them back on when I'm done. Only takes a minute to do and saves a ton of work dusting the gear otherwise.

I have various plastic (from studiospares.com) and fabric covers on my stuff - dusting and washing them is much easier than trying to get dust out of all the nooks and cranies of my gear. Also, I keep my door closed, window mostly closed; only my other half is allowed in the studio room etc. etc..

Far out sorry i took so long to get this response back but have been awayyyy!

Unreal advice as always fellas. That air purifier sounds like a treat.

We have just had all our new desks for the studio built in a joinery and they are being installed Tuesday.

Really excited to set everything up in one room and keep the dust at bay.

I'll post some dust-free pics as soon as i can.

Many thanks,

BT

I would add that you want to vacuum the dust off, using compressed air will only get it into the parts deeper

Yes, my entire 40 acre estate is covered with a massive pink nylon tapestry so dust is not an issue.

On my DW-8000, I have to clean the contacts every year or so. That's why I love J wires (like on the Cat).
Too futurist to live.
