I'm fairly technical, but with this board I feel like I'm on the junior varsity (JV). If you made it past that horrible pun, read on. I found this board on Craigslist and the knucklehead had it in some sort of edit mode so I couldn't even get a sound out of it when I tested it at first. Finally after RTFM'ing for 20 minutes I was able to get a sound out of it only when I get into the Midi settings and set local to "ON," easy enough, but it only works when you turn the pitch bender to the right and shoot up to Midi channel 4 or higher for the control channel. I can't get into the field to permantly change the local midi "on/off" permanently to "ON." It's in some sort of edit mode. The "Patch", "Rythm," "Perform", enter, exit, arrow keys etc etc etc do absolutely nothing in this mode. I bought it anyway, eager for the challenge. At this point Blue taping the pitch bender to the right is the only thing that makes it work. Yikes. Soo my first question is:
How do I get this thing to return to the "off the shelf" default settings? Any help would be super!
Roland JV-90, no cards yet, so internal patches only,
Thanks!

I found this already and tried the factory reset. The buttons mentioned do absolutely nothing, just like enter, exit, inc dec, etc. I think everything to the right of the left-most button board is out . . . I have the back off and have pulled the cmos battery, that at least got the midi int back to "on". So, at this point I think the spider webs have gotten to the main button input board, just a guess.
What are my options for externally controlling this thing with a laptop?
Any help would be excellent!

I once got a JV-80 and half the switches were dead.
hopefully the JV-90 test mode is the same......
Entering test mode on a JV-80 is done buy powering up pressing write + number 1 +number 8.
The LCD will then show the test menu.
there is a test for LEDs and switches.
This is a link for a realy kick a*s JV editor.

I'll try to get ahold of the JV90 service manual and have a look at it.

Thanks everyone, still wrenching . . .
When I pulled the cmos battery it returned to defaults and at this point is stuck in performance 1u "Milky Way" forever, ot that it's a bad one. None of the buttons work to get it into patch mode etc. The same thing also prevents me from getting it into test mode, playing the demo etc etc etc etc. Currently I am using it to drive a couple of other midi devices. This works great, so my next move is to try the jvedit software to scare some life into it. You can't really get to the connections on the button board without pulling a bunch of other stuff, so that ought to be fun.
