ESQ-1 midi confusion

Why does my ESQ-1 hear midi signals transmitted on any channel if I have it set to a specific channel in the midi menu?

I am specifically referencing use with an Alesis MMT-8, but I've had the problem when sequencing via my EA-1 too.
so what do I put down here now?

yeah, is that the wrong mode? I would test it out in another mode but it's not here with me right this second.
so what do I put down here now?

omni mode makes the device receive on any and all midi channels.
