These are pretty hard to come by, so I'd archive them while they're available.

Wow, thanks so much for that info. As you say, pretty hard to come by...although sadly there's no schematic for the display board in amongst that lot. I was hoping to lookup the vol & data slider pot values in order to replace mine, unless I missed it??

As far as I can remember, it should be a 10k linear (sometimes called type 'B') slide potentiometer. Should be 60mm long with a 15mm shaft and 45mm travel. The Volume and Data pots should be the same.

But it's simple enough to double-check all this yourself. Not really something needing schematics, a ruler and multimeter would suffice.

Yea, the ruler bit I can do, but measuring in circuit gives 3k so it has to come out for that, and I'd rather not until the new one's ready to go in. Hence the question. But if you say 10k lin, sounds probably right to me based on my measurement.

Does anyone have the schematic / service manual for the original E-Mu Proteus 1 / 2 sound module? I've done a comprehensive search on all the links posted in this thread already and I haven't been able to find it (and yes, I've also scoured the web before coming here). I guess there's not much interest in this kind of "obsolete" sampler technology.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I see. Fortunately, I was able to diagnose my problem with a little reverse engineering. Thanks for all your efforts to archiving these vintage manuals (and your generous attempt to purchase this book on behalf of the public good).

That being said, I am extremely disappointed how a few individuals have decided to not only withhold said information and even put up pay-walls to access information to what I think should be made publicly available. In the case of the Proteus 1 - E-mu is no longer servicing these synths and I doubt E-mu has any important intellectual property vested in the operation of its obsolete 80s sampling technology. I cannot find a good reason for such a service manual to be withheld.

On one hand, I get that it takes money and effort to obtain the service manual and scan it in (been there, done that, got the t-shirt), but on the other hand, it's not as if anyone has a right to sell PDFs or even photocopies of these. It's extra laughable that people are trying to sell PDFs that are less than 100 DPI and barely legible for like $35.

The upside is that people should have no qualms about re-distributing any of those items as no one selling them has a leg to stand on. Now, someone like Syntaur that bought the distribution license for some of this old stuff is a different story, but people charging significant prices for firmware binaries and PDFs is a little

And then there are the jokers trying to sell copies of Emulator X3 and the libraries as digital only products while not quite claiming legitimacy, but surely posturing as such.
