Talkbox questions

Post by ulfeide » Thu Nov 01, 2007 6:42 pm

nr1: does anyone have any recommendations for a talkbox for a good talkbox that i can just plug my Dave Smith Evolver into?

nr2: if i buy the Rocktron Banshee talkbox, will i need to use a reamping device and will the radial xamp do the job for that?

thanks a million in advance

I'm not sure if you know exactly how a talkbox works but this is basically how it works. You plug your DSI Evolver into the input of the talkbox like you would a regular effects pedal, but instead of having an output like an effects pedal it sends sound through a plastic tube which goes into your mouth. You shape the sound with your mouth then you use a microphone to pick up the sound coming out of your mouth. It's then fed to an amp or mixer, or recorder. or whatever you want. There is no need for a re-amping device.

As to which talkbox to use for a synth...pretty much any talkbox will work and I can't think of one that wouldn't. But a talkbox like the Rocktron Banshee would be better suited for a synth because you don't have to have an amp to power it.

You can find more info about talkboxes HERE, and HERE. Or a simple Google search would have done just as well.

well, you didn't answer either of my questions. i'm quite aware of what a talkbox is. thanks for trying though....

okay, f**k the first question.

do i have to use an active reamping device with the rocktron banshee or can i just plug it straight into it?
as far as i know the amplifier on the banshee is a hi-z amp, will the linesignal impendance hurt it in any way?

Ok, Sorry...I got a little confused about the reamping question. I thought you meant using it after the banshee.

My guess is that it would work fine for the Banshee without a reamping device...since it is a talkbox we're talking about. Any amount of distortion would be negligible since it is getting shaped so radically by your mouth.

I've used a homemade talkbox before without a reamping device and it sounded fine...no distortion or humming at all.

In fact I don't think I've seen anyone use one with a talkbox before. But I'd just get a talkbox and try it out...if you've got lots of distortion or humming then get a reamping device. Yes the Radial X-Amp would work, although there are cheaper solutions out there. But I think you'll be fine without one, just be sure to keep the volume down on your evolver.
