Getting a Sequencer - A Few Questions

Post by Italo_DX » Sat Dec 01, 2007 5:30 pm

I have decided to get a Yamaha QX21 MIDI sequencer to use with my JX-3P and DX21. This will be my first experience with outboard MIDI equipment  Is this how I would create a song? :

1. Plan the song out with tracks.
2. Connect a MIDI cable from MIDI Out on the synth to MIDI In on the QX21.
3. Play the song one track at a time, recording each into one of the QX21's 16 channels.
4. Connect the MIDI cable from MIDI In on the synth to MIDI Out on the QX21.
5. Select the proper track and instrument on the QX21 and synth.
6. Hit Play on the sequencer and use my PowerBook to record from the Audio Out on the synth.
7. Repeat for all tracks.
8. Combine tracks on Garageband, etc...

Does this make sense?

Also, does the QX21 allow you to dial in a specific tempo, or do you just have to make do with the "Slow-->Fast" knob?

Any help would be appreciated.

You've got the jist of it. Not sure about the tempo for sure, but most seqs bpms/tempo can be adjusted incramentaly<sp?. Heres af few extra thoughts I'm having...

QX21, did you look at the thing? They do seem cheap, but to me they sure don't look like much fun, but who knows until ya get it and try it out.

There might be a way to have IN & OUT running both ways without creating a midi feedback loop, something you'll probably have to read up on from your manuals and test out, so you don't have to unplug and re-plug constantly.

Sounds like you'v got a computer, have you thought about miding it up instead? It'll be a lot more functional and faster to edit on I'd imigine.

Goodluck!

I do have a computer with the free version of Anvil studio. I guess I'd need a MIDI interface cable. I think I'll give that a go before I bother getting a QX21.

In fact, I've already composed quite a few songs with Anvil Studio using the onscreen keyboard and I find it easy and intuitive.

I just ordered a standard MIDI In/MIDI Out -> Game Port MIDI cable from eBay. I suppose I would:

1. Set the synth to receive MIDI
2. On Anvil Studio, select the MIDI channel to transmit
3. Hit Play
4. Record from the Audio Out on the synth
5. Repeat for all tracks, etc...

Sound good?
