Ensoniq ESQ-1

Post by Spiny Venutian Toads » Fri Dec 14, 2007 6:20 pm

Hi folks

I have an Ensoniq ESQ-1 I bought back in 1986 that I just took out of storage replaced the battery and started having some fun with it
my question is on some sounds like wavbell and other bell sounds and things which seem like a lot of 'verb when you go high on the board it starts popping and crackling static only when playing and its intermittant my software version is 1.70 and all in all its perfect really but those occasional pops drive me nuts
any info or ideas would be a help
thanks

No worries. Heck, there are some topics that even I, a moderator, debate where they should go.

Good luck in solving your ESQ-1's problem.

Let me get this straight, your problem is that you have occasional crackling and popping in the higher registers on patches that use a lot of reverb-type effects and the bell waves? If this is the case which patches does it happen on? Does it happen with every single patch, or just a few? If it happens on all of them I would say it's a hardware issue, the audio jacks are on the right hand side and if they have loosened with age, what you are describing can happen. If it's only a few patches, start looking for patterns in these patches. My guess is that the older versions of the O.S. or wave ROMs might not have had all the kinks worked out of them, or you might just need to change some settings or parameters to make this problem less obvious. Interestingly enough, my Ensoniq ESQ-1 has O.S. version 1.70 as well, so if you can tell me exactly which patches are doing this, I might be able to try and replicate your problem and find a solution. Since you say you bought your ESQ-1 in 1986, I guess that means that mine is pretty early, although I already assumed that because the serial number is 11152. Ensoniq started their serial numbers at 10000, so in reality mine is serial #1152. Just out of curiosity, what's the serial number on your unit?

Electrolytic capacitors and transistors. And maybe a few op amps as well.

Hey machinengeist do you work on esq1's??
I sure do. In fact I work on every possible electronic musical instruments.

One note: I've got a truckload of synths to finish the repairs. So I might not start working on your ESQ-1 before January. I'm alone in the repairshop.

You can send it anytime with USPS as long as you are not in a hurry. If you do, please include the work order (available on the website or here). I've got a room full of synths and it's getting hard to remember which synth have what problems.

You can contact me using the email button below or by visiting my website: www.MuzikElektronix.com

Thank you!

Noted.

I do not have the Casio LCD board nor the screen in stock. And Casio parts are not easily found.

BUT, I've got the service manual coming in 1-2 weeks. So I'll be able to build the board and hook up a compatible screen.

I'll let you know when the documents come in.

Thanks!

I guess I should have rechecked there before ordering the original. It wasn't there the last time I checked (before summer).

Thanks solder guy!
