Mixer aux send/stereo return problem?

Post by xibalba » Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:41 pm

I have a mackie 1402-vlz2 mixer (kind of like the one pictured here http://www.mackie.com/home/showimage.ht ... 02VLZ3.jpg) I decided that I wanted all of my effects pedals and effects racks chained together and not dedicated to one instrument. So i hooked all of them up and placed it in the send/return section of my mixer, (i left the aux volume at U) and when i turn down the left channel main mix slider i do not hear any effects, but when i turn down the right main mix slider (leaving the left one at U i hear the effects). Does any one know what the problem may be or if i even have a problem at all?

Pedal chain is.

Aux Send 1 -> Input (Mono) EXH Sterophase Out (Mono) -> Input (Mono) Sansamp PSA-1 Output (L/R Quarter Inch) -> Input (L/R RCA) Korg KP3 Output (L/R RCA) -> Input (L/R Quarter Inch) TC Electronics Nova Reverb Output (L/R) -> Input (L/R) Line 6 DL4 Output (L/R) -> Input (L/R) Alesis Bitrman Output (L/R) -> Stereo Return (L/R).

Further Note I have tried a couple of pedals just by itself and the same thing happens.

Thanks in advance! :)

You don't hear anything when you turn the main mix down? That's cause you turned the main mix down.

The Aux return still goes back to the main mix before it goes out to whatever you're monitoring through, if you turn the main mix down you're turning everything down.

I wouldn't do it that way if I were you, for a start guitar pedals aren't designed to be fed with a line level signal so you'll be clipping at least the first one in the chain. Secondly they don't all have true hardwire bypasses so you're going to pick up a whole lot of noise as the signal goes in and out of a whole lot of gain stages.

what i meant when i said turn it down i mean that when i turn the main mix right channel slider down i hear the effects mixed with the dry signal, when i turn the main mix left channel slider down (with the right still up) all i can hear is dry

I'd check the configuration of your effects inputs/outputs. I'm not familiar with the ones you have, but just make sure that the signal is indeed routed as stereo through the whole chain.

Secondly, make sure your returns 1 & 2 are both up and panned left & right. Obvious but easy to overlook.

Maybe check your cables & connections too.

If I read your chain correctly, its sounds lik you are only getting a mono signal returned. Plug your chain into a normal stereo channel and make sure you are getting signal on both sides

Even better, plug it into two mono channels and make sure they're both getting signal. Panning can come later.
