Yamaha DJX Cutoff and Resonance

Post by Kaled » Sat Jan 05, 2008 4:43 am

The DJX's step and real-time sequencer will not record cutoff and resonance edits. Does any one know if this data can be transfered via MIDI to a sequencer? Can all data, regardless of synth, be transfered via MIDI? Thanks in advance.

Cut & Res is a standard midi message, usually, meaning I've not ran into a synth that don't send or receive them if they have them and midi, but I suppose its possible one might not do this, that can send and receive cut & res messages via midi. Therfore I think it would be allowable with the DJX series that it sends them out to be recorded to a sequencer that will receive them, something like a QY70 should integrate fairly easily and well with a DJX through midi, but I don't have a DJX to test out to be 100% positive. I say try it, if it don't then it don't, if it does then it does. Whats the hold up? Do you not have a decent sequencer and wondering if you should get one just for that or not?

Not all data is transferable via midi. LFO datas arnt commonly sent for example, but there are ways around that, and perhaps some other things like effects. One synth may have an ADR envelope and another an ADSR, stuff like that gets a little more complex to explain, but Res & Cut are usually standard midi messages that send out and can be recieved.

Thanks for the response Zamise. Currently, I do not have an external sequencer. I am thinking about buying a MMT-8. They seem inexpensive and easy to use.

An MMT-8, looking... the 16 channels per 8 seperate tracks sounds intresting. I've not used one, so I won't comment further on it. Hope it'll suit ya if you get it.

MMT-8's used to be plentiful in the 90's - every other studio had one because they were pretty cheap, so flexible and easy yet fairly tight timing for most techno apps also. trouble is they've since become harder to find in exc condition due to their generally cheap build.

perhaps you may be lucky and find one new in-the-box, though!
