Using LFO's as sequencer/trigger - a Tutorial

Post by Bitexion » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:36 pm

I had never thought of this purpose for LFO's, it can be duplcated on any synth with more than one oscillator and LFO. Really awesome stuff.

You can use the LFO's square wave as on/off triggers for the VCA for instance. Use 1 square lfo to modulate OSC1 to pitch by one octave.
Use 2. square LFO at half the speed to modulate OSC2 pitch by an octave (or fifth or whatever) and you get a cool sequence chugging along.
Or use the Saw LFO to make kickdrum beat, and a square LFO to trigger a noise (snare drum) and you got a drumbeat just by holding a key.

It's a also a nice demo of the ESQ-1 since he's using it in the examples.
You should check out the rest of the InsideSynthesis series too. Lots of cool tips and tricks.

Edit: to mod, this isn't a help topic, it's a programming tutorial :P

I've done something similar with my RS7000. It has a 16 step programable LFO. I'll put the Depth up on Pitch, BPM sync the time to 1 measure, and make it stepped instead of curved and then I can adjust it sort of like a programable arpeggiator for each step, which is one of the few things the RS lacks, but the LFO and other stuff make up for... Anyhow, it don't send out via Midi like an arp might, but it'll take notes in obviously and LFO it. I doesn't do it for most drum kits either, but would for samples although its just a pitch, not the actual note, so I'm not going to get something like a kick, snare, reverse crash out of the same note, well unless its already in the sample but then won't need it anyway, but anyway its a neat trick I like to pass along to folks too when I can to those that would understand it. Get to know your LFO!

P.S Nice new avtar Bite, you know, we might get a movie this year DR3000, hoping it'll be good, but well, something to hope for...

Gotta love the DCR guy. I always found the highest buildings to launch myself off of in spectacular ways.

I recreated the examples on the SQ-80 and messed about with other waveforms too, made some really great pulsing thingies.
Specially when you start playing chords with those LFO sequences!

Strange I've never thought of using the LFO's for such things.
Can do more with the Andromeda, it has 3 LFO's, and you can adjust the pulsewidth of the square LFO for even more unrythmic beating.
In part 1 he shows some VERY interesting ways to create drumbeats using LFO and a step sequencer.

i have at least one patch like this on all my stuff (that's capable), so i can just copy it over and tweak the sound to taste. MIDI-synced LFOs makes this like a halfway decent poor-man's sequencer.
