MS-20 really low output... HELP!

Post by nadafarms » Sun Apr 06, 2008 3:43 am

I got a ms-20 recently and unfortunately it has a really low output, like with the headphones plugged + volume max I can hardly hear it when it should be destroying my ear drums.

For 2 days it worked as normal, then went back to being really quiet in both the headphone and main output.

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated, I'm terrified that this synth is going to cost a ton to get working properly. All the functions work fine, its just the low output.

Is this a common problem? Is this the end of the world?

HELP!!!!

thanks :D

Sounds like the uPC4558C (Dual Op-Amp) is going south. The only way to tell is to test it out. The datasheet should be online. A digital multimeter is needed to test it out. But you must know what you're doing.

Thanks!

I know this is bad... but I found last night that if I lift it up and shake the whole synth it will come back in at full volume for a little while then eventually cut back out. So I'm thinking there is just some loose connection in there.

I'll just take it to a tech before I break it from shaking it around too much.

Thanks again.

Ms synths are a pain to take apart and to work on. It does sound like somethings not connecting properly, If you take off the side panel on the patchbay side you will see some connectors that you could push in.

Do not have the synth plugged in while you do this, Get a torch to see what your pushing in and try it again.

BTW...The ms has quite a few 4558's inside. If these fail it's normal that you would have no output.
