tweaking query

Post by britesynth » Thu Apr 10, 2008 3:23 pm

hi everyone!

im a total newbie to synths, i play in a band and we cover songs, mostly rnb's, anyway here's something i want to consult to you guys, currently im gigging with a roland juno-d, which apparently im not satisfied with the sound it offers so what i did was to hook my self up with a korg x5dr module synth since it offers a lot of programming capabilities ang a lot of "phat" sounds plus a price that is not so expensive in my case,,,

the question is... can i possible tweak or change the values of my x5dr using the knobs (parameters like cutoff, attack, brightness, etc...) of my juno-d? and eventually save and retain the settings on the module? i tried it but values on the x5dr doesnt change at all, obviously the controller is just sending the control change message that i tweak upon turning the knobs, i was wonderin if there is a way to tweak and change the values of the module using the my controller? so it wont be that hard editing since all the values that i need to tweak are already assigned presets to the juno-d's knobs.... thanks a lot! wish you guys could help a newbie like me... :D

They are both midi capable right? Your using midi out from your Roland to the Korgs midi in? The next thing and you may have to check your manuals is to make sure the Roland is sending midi on a channel that the Korg can receive and that its set to too. One or the other may be set on a difrent channel. Most of the settings like Res & Cut are common Midi values that can be controlled. Some might not, but many of the important ones should be able to control another synth via this method. Just have to make sure the channels are set up right, 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc if ya can do that with both of them. Some gear will only recieve and send on certain channels too, so if you can't adjust one or the other to be those channels then your kind of stuck unless you get some other gear that deals with rerouting channels.

Good luck, and usually if you keep trying it will come to you with midi stuff even if don't make 100% sense to ya yet. It never will heh.

actually sir the channels are matching and everythings fine, sound changes whenever i twist and turn knobs on my controller going to the module, what i meant with my question is how will i be able to change the values on the module, obviously the sound changes when i turn knobs but the values never changes, let say i turn a knob for attack on the controller, the attack level changes, but the values on the module are the same, never moved at all, :D

Well that does seem odd. I've never seen that happen, don't have either units you have though, the values always change on my gear if the sound does. I think it would be more of a problem with Korg or the sound module though from what your saying. If nobody else here has one and can help ya, have you tried seeing if there is users group out there, maybe on Yahoo. If so I'd bet they could tell ya for sure what the deal is on it. Not sure I'd bet on getting support from Korg on it.

Sorry couldn't be more help, hope you get it figured out. Odd one I think, change your subject line on first post to include the module name, might better attract those with one to this thread.

The question you seem to be asking is whether you can use the knobs on the Juno to program the Korg.

The answer is no.

The knobs are just sending MIDI control signals which the Korg is responding to as it is played.

There are some synthesizers that do allow you to program them with external MIDI controls, but your X5DR is not one of them.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
