ARP Axxe excessive key pop/clicking sound?

Post by cprescott08 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 5:40 am

O.K. So, I have recently acquired an ARP Axxe MKII and as I continue to familiarize myself with this synth I have a question regarding what I would consider to be fairly significant key pop/clicking when played.
(Similar to a typewriter sound..remember those :D )

Note: this sound is Not always noticeable. Generally settings that are generating higher frequencies will tend to drown out the click

Is this a common attribute for this particular machine or could there be an issue?

The key clicking sound that is generated can be quite noticeable often times as loud as the synth sound itself.

Should anyone also own an Axxe and willing to run a simple test..
Set all the sliders to FULLY DOWN position and raise ONLY the VCA Gain Slider FULLY UP then play the keys. You will hear a clicking sound?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Also try raising the VCF Frequency Slider to the FULL UP position along with the VCA Gain Slider and the click/popping sound will both increase in volume and become more defined (crisper sounding)?

Raising the vca slider should play the osc without the key pressed.

Is the click only with the key pressed..?

The click only occurs when the keys are pressed.

With all the sliders positioned as I mentioned
(ONLY the VCA GAIN and/or VCF FREQ Sliders FULLY UP)
the synth shouldn't be generating any sound on its own as none of the Audio Mixer waveforms are raised/engaged?

Yes...I wasn't thinking.

I have not come across this problem before.

Is the ADSR working as it should...?

Everything else seems to be working just fine.

You may recall a few weeks back we corresponded a bit regarding another issue I was experiencing with this synth in which it was
generating a constant frequency sound.

We first attempted to fix the problem by replacing the CA3086 with a better CA3046 which had no effect on curing the issue.

The problem ended up simply being a bad EG Release trace and a cold solder joint both of which were repaired and problem solved.

I have just received it back from this repair and everything seems to be functioning great when I began noticing the current issue?

Update

Post by cprescott08 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 6:13 pm

A bit of an update after a little more experimenting..

WITHOUT any keys pressed I am actually noticing some sound.
With both the VCA Gain & VCF Freq Sliders ONLY Fully Up
as previously mentioned:

The synth is generating a constant hissing sound and the clicking/pop every couple seconds on its own.

This key click does become louder and also occurs whenever the keys ARE pressed as well.

It might be worth calling the tech that worked on your synth. It sounds like the problem is connected or in the area of the last problem.
I would recap the power supply while it's open...Only takes 20 mins.

Let me know..
