help - wall mounting synths

Post by Tridact » Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:23 pm

Does anyone wall mount their synths, kind of like how they do at music stores? I'm thinking of getting something like this:

I'm wondering if they do too much damage to walls to be worth it (I know the DX-7 would be out of the question). Otherwise I think it would a great way to utilize my limited space. Anyone have experience with something like this or something similar? Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I thought about buying slat wall like what guitar center uses, but I'm not sure if they make brakets large enough (or strong enough) for larger, vintage analog synths. Instead, I'm chopping up a bunch of "A frame" stands.

If you do use those type of wall mounts, be sure to anchor them to studs.

Yeah - I would definitely anchor them to studs. I think most of my old synths are light enough.

Regarding slatwalls - I've seen some pretty big and heavy synths on those, so you might not rule them out as an option.

I've used standard DIY flexi-shelving to do this:

The top two angled sections by making shelves with angled supports:

Likely more work than those you've pictured but they're strong, only two 50cm long arms to support a Synthex and an OBXa separately. These are reported to be strong enough to hold 50kg of weight, although the wall mounting strips have to be fairly well screwed into wall bricks, not partitions unless you screw into the timber frame. The foam coverings are water pipe lagging.

Mine took a fair amount of work including making the EMU II cabinet (with two 3U sections below side by side) but worth it to get more synths in a congested space. :)

That's a really nice setup. I might consider doing what you've done there, even though I fear using a table saw.

A hand held jigsaw is nothing to use and does the job great with a steady hand. :)

Quick question for JMP:

How do you reach the two bottom synths? Lie on the floor? Play with your toes? :)

Heh, I have a stool for the OB when needed and it's a cross-legged sitting affair for the EMU. Not too easy for an unfit 38 year old. OK whilst you're there, but try stand and straighten up afterwards...aarrggh.
