anyone have a dbx 266 (or similar)? i need your power specs

Post by killedaway » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:12 am

i picked up an old (made in 95) dbx 266 compressor/gate at the swap meet the other day, sans power supply. it's apparently 18v AC, but after searching everywhere (including dbx's owner's manual), i can't find the precise specs so i can scare up a suitable replacement from the thrift store. any help is greatly appreciated!

i use a dbx 266XL... however it has an internal power supply, you just need a standard computer power cord.

i assume it's 18V DC you mean.

Why would you assume that? Lots of stuff uses AC supplies, for example all the Alesis stuff, the x0xb0x, the half rack Electrix stuff and more. If you have an AC input it's pretty easy to divide the voltage up and down to get the different voltages you need in a circuit, like +5 for digital components and +15 and -15 for analogue stages.

killedaway: Sorry but I've only used the XL as well. Have you tried emailing dbx customer support? They might help you out.

i don't see power supplies in my studio gear very often that consist of an external AC transformer and all DC rectification taking place internally. in fact, i think i've only seen it on my Radias which i assumed was an unusual case.

this thread apparently already happened in a parallel universe; looks like you need at least 500mA 18V, although obviously double-check about whether this is AC or DC:

thanks for the replies, you two. yeah, too bad this isn't an XL, or i'd be playing around with it already.

xpander, the back of the unit itself states "POWER 18VAC". the poster from that thread you shared indeed mentioned that he was using a 500ma PS, so hopefully that should be enough info to get me there. as for stuff that requires an external AC adapter (vs. DC), i actually have several devices: EMX/ESX, an Alesis FX rack unit, and my FR Revolution.

and before anyone tells me, i know these compressors are well onto the low end. i already have an RNC -- this is just for drum mangling: pumping, breathing... that sort of thing. :D

sigh... i don't know why i always assume the manufacturers won't have the info i want -- sometimes they do. as i was having trouble finding a suitable replacement, i e-mailed them, and got this reply (less than a day later, mind you) from Jason at dbx:

"Unfortunately, dbx no longer stocks these power supplies. If you have one of the below listed products you will need a power supply that provides the specs shown below.

Models which used this power supply:
242
266 (Original)
274
286
296
760X

120 Volt Operation

If running on 100-120 Volt AC, please try the model shown at the below link. This power supply has been verified to work with these dbx models.

http://www.swnetworksolutions.com/t41200500a010g.html

Here are the original power supplies specs:
Input:120VAC 60Hz 16W (this is for 120 Volt Only)
Output:18-20VAC 500-550mA
Class 2 Transformer
Barrel jack is approximately 5 mm
"

figured this could very likely help someone else, so i thought it was worth the bump.

Thanks for the information thus far. In case it's of use to anyone else, I just purchased this AC-AC power adapter off of Digikey: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/det ... d1lMIn0%3D .

I don't have it in hand yet, so not positive the barrel plug connection will fit right, but it appears to be close.
