JP 8000 Volume Output

Post by Neonlights84 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 1:49 pm

Ok, so I recently acquired a JP8000 for a nice price.

Since then, I have been having some issues maybe someone can help with. After just getting it, i noticed the amp level knob stopped responding to my dictation, despite my efforts to use contact cleaner on it. I figured it was no big deal and moved on.

However, since then, i've noticed that if i turn the machine on and play certain patches, and then come back in like 5 minutes, the JP has seemingly decided that it was too loud, and by itself, drops the volume by somewhere btw 1/2 to 2/3, and this volume drop can not be rectified with either volume control. I am really started to freak out a little bit, as I have never in all my days picked up a defective machine. I am really hoping one of you folks can help me out! Is there something i can do to fix this?!

Very likely it's another caseof defective volume potentiometer. Contact cleaner won't swolve the problem. You need to replace it or have it replaced. That's a "classic" defect. Also probable is an op-amp problem. But startwith the pot first.

Is a new potentiometer something that you think that a relative novice could replace?

Also, what is the op-amp problem you were refering to? Is that doable by ones lonesome?

Is any of this work something you could do?

Stephane could do both, depending on his time frame.

As far as you doing the job - how handy are you with a soldering iron? If not very, I'd be leary. Replacing the pot (a board-mounted one, if I remember correctly) isn't difficult, but if you're not sure what you're doing, it could be. The op-amp is not something I'd recommend to a novice, and neither would Stephane.

Look for a local repair shop (I'm not familiar with anyone in IL, unfortunately) and see what they'll charge or contact Stephane about his schedule. I'm in Michigan, but my schedule is kind of iffy right now or I'd say send it along. We'll see.
