Hi ...
I know my way around softsynths a bit ... but I just bought my first hardware synth and I'm lost ... even when I Read The Fine Manual.
OK ... on the JD-990, can anyone instruct me or point me to a link about how to access the patches on the expander board? The manual talks about Internal, Card and Rom presets. I understand the latter two ... so the answer must have something to do with the Internal memory section? Or?
I should add I just installed the expansion board. It was used, but I know it was working. Is there some initialization process you need to do when you install the board?
Thanks for any help.

Re: JD-990 Expander Board Patches
Hi
What you have to do is
When you turn on the JD, press "Utility", then press "F4" (card) and then press "f5" (load PRM). Turn the data wheel until you get to "Expansion Board/JD", the first sound you see is called "Portamental". Unfortunately, you can only access the sounds one at a time so it may be a good idea to put the sounds from the board onto a RAM card. Does that answer your question?

Re: JD-990 Expander Board Patches
Hey, White ... Thanks so much!
It got me 95% the way there ... I could see the board was loaded but couldn't hear anything till I used the scroll arrow to highlight the patch number ... probably just a 'noob' thing you figured I should have already known.
Of course, every great answer is punished by more questions: I've got three.
1) Are the RAM cards still available anywhere?
2) Now that I can find the patches ... how would I incorporate 1 of them into a performance? ... or is that what the RAM card is needed for?
3) Or, can a patch from the expansion board be placed somewhere temporarily and then swapped out for one of the 64 patches in the "Internal" sounds bank? That "Internal" soundbank sort of confuses me ... I assume the are contructed out of the A & B ROM sounds. Correct?

Re: JD-990 Expander Board Patches
Hi
Ram cards can sometimes be found on ebay (you will need an M256e RAM card).
You could place (write) the sounds from the board into the internal memory. The internal memory is RAM. So when you've written 64 sounds from the board into the internal memory, you can insert a RAM card into the card slot, save the 64 sounds onto the RAM card and then restore the internal sounds back into the internal memory.
You can only write 64 sounds into the internal memory whereas there are 256 sounds on the board.

Re: JD-990 Expander Board Patches
Find attached a .zip file that has the patches from the Vintage board expansion saved as MIDI files. Play them back from a sequencer into your JD-990 and have quick access to all those patches.
There are 8 total files. You may only want to do the ones that are the JD patches, and not do the JV-style patches.
cheers,
Ian

Re: JD-990 Expander Board Patches
Hey Amigos ... thanks so much.
I've heard about Midi Quest and I plan to try it and try to get my head around it. See if I can use these patches that way.
I presume all I need is a midi in/ midi out connection from the JD-990 through my sound cards midi ports to the PC.
So much software, so little time.
Hey? That was the reason I got this ... to get away from the software! LOL
