How to link JD-990s?

Post by bienpegaito » Thu Apr 02, 2009 4:51 am

I have a little knowledge ... but as they say, that's a dangerous thing.

I'd like to find/ learn some basic information about linking two JD-990s and setting them up with my sequencer. I keep reading about how you can link up to 4 (and some say 8) units. I see that each unit has a midi in/out/thru. Does linking simply mean linking the 'master unit' midi/ thru to the 2nd units midi in? Or is there more to it?

I've heard that a program called Midi Quest will essentially let you program a synth like the JD-990 and control it like a VSTi in a sequencer. I assume that you merely need to have a midi in/ out hookup into your computer either through your soundcard's midi ports or a usb midi port and point the software preferences to that port for it to find the JD-990.

However, this seems like it would only find the 'master' and you'd have no access to the linked unit ... unless you also had that one midi'd in/out to the computer.

Can anyone tell me what the 'hookup' for linking JD-990s is or where I can find direction? There doesn't seem to be anything about it in the User Guide or Reference Manuals ... at least by reading the Table of Contents, Topical Index and Index.

Also, if someone here uses Midi Quest could you point me to a 'user's group' and/ or tutorial?

Thank you.
