Hi guys,
This is my first post.
I'm new to analog synths and just bought an SH-101. There is hum noise connecting the SH-101 and my amp (Fender Bassman 100). I am using a TRS cable from the output of the SH-101 to the input of the amp. It's making a hum noise. Am I using the right cable? Is there are standard procedure for powering these things on and off and connecting them to amps. Any help would be great appreciated.
Thanks.

Is the cable shielded ? For turning on make sure you have the volume turned down on the SH-101 before powering up though, you might hear a loud pop from the AMP if you turn on the 101 with volume up.
Or maybe perhaps your AMP is just really noisy, or you could try putting more distance between the 2 of them.

I'm not sure if the cable is shielded or not, I've used it with my guitar and bass and it works fine.
Should the cable be shielded or unshielded?
So I made a mistake. I was originally using a TS instrument cable. Should I have been using a TRS cable?
Thank you kindly.

Balanced or unbalanced cables will not matter with the 101's output jacks, although I do not know about your amp. Best use TS. Your issue more than likely is the power source. Run it off of batteries first to see if the noise goes away. If it does, get a Boss PSA-120 or 220(whatever voltage your outlet emits) and that should fix it. If neither does, then you have a faulty power supply circuit, and it will need repair.
The Boss power supply is strictly regulated to 9V, whereas just some willy nilly power supply may be putting out something different. I hear those nifty Godlyke supplies are the end-all, but I've never tried one, and they are a bit more expensive anyway.

I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

If you are using a bassman, then you may have a gain structure issue, so make sure that you turn the 101's volume up to full 100 percent, and then adjust the Bassman for the volume that you want.

I think the SH-101 can suffer from noise when either played from dying batteries or a low quality DC adapter?
wait, I think it was that on batteries the pitch wavers and slowly drops as the batteries died.. I can't remember, Kap10Kurt told me and I was a little drunk at the time
. Either way, give it a shot.

The 101 has a hum on it's output. It's well known.

Might be the external power supply. I'd try another maybe?

I have never noticed excessive hum from 101's, as long as you use a regulated power supply of sufficient current, or batteries. I think that the issue here is that you are using a guitar amp, it has a lot of gain, and the wrong input impedance for a keyboard.
