Probably a dead keyboard scanner chip. Can be replaced if you can find one. Here's a good site for ESQ-1 info: http://www.pic101.com/ensoniq/faq.htm

cool thanks. also i'm trying to save my 40 patches to my computer. i know how to do it, i just don't know how to perform it. do i press the first key of each patch or press them all while recording? i'm a bit lost on how to apply them while recording. i have to replace my battery and will loose the 40 internal patches if i don't save them to tape or my computer.

Use a sysex librarian program, hook up midi and then dump the patches that way. Don't need to touch the keys at all.

At least on the SQ-80 (it's big brother) the factory sounds are stored in a chip, so you can recall them by holding some buttons when you turn it on..
