Deep Bass Nine accent issue

Hi folk,

I'm new here, but have found a few threads here related to the Control Synthesis Deep Bass Nine, so thought I would try here for help. I've been reading and posting to the VSE reviews pages for a while though - it's a great resource.

I received my DB9 damaged in transit. Both rack ears are quite badly bent. At first I thought the electronics were OK though. However, I wasn't really sure what to expect from it.

After more extensive playing, and reading about the synth's operation, I can't notice any effect at all from the Accent control. I don't have a user manual, but I have read that the accent is triggered by note on velocity. However, turning the Accent all the way up or down makes absolutely no difference for me, regardless of the note velocity.

The filter is also pretty strange; it seems to have only a very mild effect, and is almost imperceptible without the Env Mod turned up. I wasn't expecting a 303 filter, but thought it would at least behave as a filter. From reading about the synth online, this seems to be a common observation from users, so I'm not sure that my unit is faulty here. I will try tuning the trimmer inside for this, though.

I guess the other query I have about the synth, is how deep the bass should really be? Mine is actually pretty tame in the bottom end. I have to run it through some heavy effects to fatten it up. This point has me a little puzzled, as I have read a number of posts/reviews stating that the synth has great bottom end, is actually quite good as a general purpose bass synth, and even suited to DnB lines. I think I get better bass from my soft synths. I like my software, but it doesn't seem quite right. It does sound quite hearty run through my Ensoniq DP/2, but half of that is just the effects.

So, any DB9 owners here, who could share an opinion? I'm not sure if the synth is just different from my expectations, or if mine has received some significant damage.

In the other DB9 thread I've read here, member Syn303 kindly mentioned that he knows the designer, and provided an email link. I may follow up on that lead, if I can't get anywhere.

Cheers folk,

-Oli

Hi,

I've sorted this one out. Sorry for the unnecessary post. It was an issue with my MIDI setup.

Anyway, the DB9 seems to be working, it's just less impressive than I had expected.

Cheers,
