Korg Trident battery replacement

Post by THEODICY » Sun Jul 26, 2009 1:32 am

I just aquired a very nice Korg Trident MKII at a very great price. The synth is in great shape overall and sounds amazing. I want to keep it around for a long time. I've read that this board can suffer from the same fate as the polysix where the battery leaks and causes damage. I want to prevent this but don't know of any area synth techs but I do have some engineers where I work that could do the job. I've read some loose instructions on an older post about the Trident MKI on this board but just want to make sure this is the same for the Trident MKII. Here is the quote:

The battery is located on the KLM-292 (the largest board on the front panel) Unfortunately you have to remove the entire board from the panel, desoldering the five power connections.
Remove the old battery and put in a battery holder for a CR2032 coin cell instead. Replace R26 with a diode, cathode facing D9 (eg 1N4148) and remove C21. Remount the board and you´re set to go!

I took the opportunity to replace all the electrolytic caps and all four CMOS 4051, since I know from reparing Polysixes that they´ll fail sooner or later...

Is all of this accurate? If I take all of this info to my engineer co-worker, he won't look at me funny, right? All parts are commonly available I'm assuming?

I had no problems doing the above battery replacement procedure on my Mk I Trident. (I used a 1N914 instead of a 1N4148 but both will work.) However, the Mk I and II are not identical - the boards have different names. However, it shouldn't be too hard for your technician to find out where the battery is and then do the replacement procedure there. Unlike the Mk I, the service manual for the Mk II is available, so that should make it easier: http://www.korganalogue.net/korgother/index.html
