I could really use some help creating this sequence

Post by halen99 » Sat Oct 03, 2009 4:01 pm

Hi all, I'm desperate here. I've been trying to figure out how to emulate this sequence below for a week now with no success. I've played around with minimoog, arp, and many effects but I just can't get my hands around this. I'm going to post a vocal example of the sound I'm looking for. Hopefully someone out there has ideas. If I don't have the right equipment I'm open to looking into what is needed. Please please help me.

Medication.

On a more serious note, try running a synth through a distortion of some kind. Overdrive the filter, tune the resonance, and distort it; try other filter types than LP - a couple of BP filters tuned differently can mimic vocal sounds, if that's part of what you're after.

Eheh well I came up with this. Sorry if it´s not what you were expecting :)
The eeeowww part is done with auto-glide. In this example it was pre-programmed into an MC-202 sequencer.

I've never seen that sequencer before. looking at it on youtube now. I assume that you cannot input other instrument's into it right? You have to use the keyboard on itself?

With the built-in kbd you can insert notes into the sequencer and also play the built-in synth in real-time although it´s a bit awkward. You can use an external kbd (1v/oct) for the same functions, but the internal processor will add a significant delay (latency) to the synth sounds, so it´s not very useful for live-playing. The SH-101 is a good alternative. Same sound, user-friendly sequencer, no latency. There´s a better description in the VSE Database.

I'm looking at getting a synth with a sequencer. Over these two would you then recommend the sh-101?

Nice track, what'd you use for the beat loop? I need to get some better drum samples I think #-o

To OP, I think what you want is more of a filtered sound than the melody, your vocal demo had mostly filtering and practically no melody (not meant as an insult just a comment). Have you heard of the TB-303, maybe this is more the sound you're after, and you can do cool formant filtering on the MS-20 too which has a distinct vocal quality.

Obligitary YouTube Demo

Thanks. I used Live to edit the loops. The usual. I think these two were from a Futere Music mag DVD. I saved the files. I can upload the .wavs if you want them.

Yeah, cheers that'd be cool if you could - I get FM myself but don't find all that much useful from the samples, that one's nice and chunky though 8)

No problem. The drumloops are from CFJ Audio: 1- "Drumloop", 2 - edit, 3 - edit, 4 - AltBeat D03, 5 - edit 6 - edit. Last three are loops from my 202.

The SH-101 is a better synth; the MC-202 has a better sequencer... It´d be best for you to start a thread at the Buyer´s Guide as there are lots of other options available. The Korg Electribes and MS2000 come to mind and are very popular around here :)

Cool, thanks. :D

Might be able to splice up some sample hits and use them in a track
