EMU Proteus 2000 OS 2.26 Upgrade procedure help

Post by Damo303 » Wed May 26, 2010 10:51 am

Has anyone here upgraded their 'EMU Proteus 2000 OS' on a new Mac?

I've read that the last version that was written (OS 2.26) has many improvements and extra filters so it would be very nice to install it. However it seems that you need a program called 'E-Loader' to load the OS on and this is very old software (Mac OS9 by the looks of it) so I'm wondering if anyone has successfully performed this procedure in recent times and if so how did they do it on newer machines?

The update and E-Loader software is here:

I found myself in the same situation when I bought my 2500 last year and unfortunately, you're out of luck as far as using a newer Mac for updates. I ended up having to borrow my mom's laptop PC to run the E-Loader program; it was extremely finicky and took a number of attempts and a great amount of patience before I finally got it done. Good luck to you.

Ok thanks, I thought it could get tricky. If I got hold of an old pc would I need a midi device or is there another way to transfer the data?

I used a midi interface myself, and I believe one is necessary for system updates (because I remember thinking at the time that the 2500's USB port was kind of a tease that way). If you don't have one already, they're not too expensive and simple 1 in/1 out versions are very cheap.
By the way, the computer I computer I used was just running Windows XP, so I don't expect you should need to hunt up anything too arcane.

Why they couldn't simply provide OS updates as sysex files like every other manufacturer is beyond me though. Grrr...

I know this is a really old thread, but actually E-mu used the standard MIDI File Dump protocol to perform firmware updates.

I re-implemented this using WebMIDI, so any modern computer running Chrome (including macOS and Linux machines) can now updates Proteus 2000 and EOS Ultra units via my site at https://emu.tools/

Hi, I was able to use your emu.tools site on Linux and reflash the OS. Now if I could get a patch editor going maybe this emu proteus 2000 could be a usable GM box!
I didn't notice when I bought it off of ebay that it doesn't have the Big data knob.
Anybody want to trade a primo ESI-32 and 2000 for a comparable GM box, maybe a Roland?

Thanks
