I typed in "Free Speech Synthesizer" into Yahoo and the 2nd result (1st was Wiki article on speech synthesis) is:
http://freetts.sourceforge.net/docs/index.php

Search engines are your freind. Probably quicker than creating an account on a forum just to ask one question.

There's also AnalogX SayIt (if you're looking for something a bit less realistic and more Speak & Spell-ish): http://www.analogx.com/contents/downloa ... eeware.htm

If you have a Mac then you already have one! Go to System_Preferences>Speech

That speaking function has been on Macs for MANY years, now...

The nice thing about SayIt is that in addition to having a Preview button (as well as Pitch, Speed, Modulation, and Cascade sliders to tweak), it also has a Render button that will spit out a Wav file for you. So you don't need to have an audio recording program open at the same time.

That does sound cool.

It is! :thumbleft:

The AnalogX site has lots of fun, free little audio widgets. I believe most or all of them are Windows-only though (sorry Mac folks, you'll have to entertain yourselves with your smug sense of superiority instead ;) ).

Smug superiority? I resemble that remark ;)

And I just remembered an online speech thingy by att here. My co-workers and I used to all turn on our pc speakers and entertain ourselves to no end with that one.

All of the earlier Creative soundblaster sound cards (soundblaster 16, 32, AWE64) came bundled with one - "singing text" and "text'ole, as early as 1990's. I have an AWE64 sound card and it has it on the driver disk. Needs the soundcard installed to operate though as it uses the speech engine built into the sound card. You can make it speak AND also sing, and has a variety of male/female voices and some demo .txt files to show what it can do.

AnalogX "sayit" is a completely different sounding program and is incredibly fun, too! Very Kraftwerk in sound.

For singing on the Mac, I use Vocal Writer. It only has one "vocalist" but it's a cutie :)

I used that in a song, once! It worked very well!

There is one called s**t Talker which is lots of fun. I used it in a song (Angels + Dung) to recite Bible verses in a sing-songy type of voice.

There are a variey of voices on this one.
