Juno 106

Post by aphlux » Thu Jun 24, 2010 12:30 am

Course I browsed older topics, but since i've never come across this problem before, I just figured I would just make it easy for me and ask.

Everytime I play, some notes work well, some sound like crackling. So I tried a different output (plugged in headphones) and tried that same note again and it played. SO my next step was to think maybe the contacts were dirty. Then I thought to myself, if that was the case, the note wouldnt sound at all ( correct me if im wrong) So then I went and thought about the voice chip issue. Another reason with the sounds as well is that it sounds like the pitch will just keep rising and rising, and when I play notes in a higher octave, it will sound likes notes in a few octaves lower( and no I dont have it transposed)

Any suggestions? I think its the voice chips, tbh.

Was the note clean when you played it? I have yet to work on a 106 but would it only glitch on the 6 note if ti were a voice chip? If it was clean through the headphones I would look at the output circuit.

just incase you have not seen these.

Due to the way the voice allocation works by default, you can't always count on the same note playing on the same voice. But if you power the 106 up in test mode (hold down Transpose when turning on), then press Poly1 and Poly2 at the same time so both are lit, then each note you play will use the next voice in sequence (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and back to 1), showing which voice is playing in the LED display.

Then you can play a note repeatedly, or a series of notes, and find out which one is acting up by watching the display. Then you can fix/replace the chip for that voice.

For example:

Turn on synth with Transpose button pressed. Then press Poly1+Poly2. Dial in a patch with the sliders.

Play a note. LED shows "1", and note sounds fine.
Play another note. LED shows "2", and note sounds fine.
Play another note. LED shows "3", and note sounds crackly. Now you know voice 3's chip is bad.
Play another note. LED shows "4", and note sounds fine.
And so forth.
Two VCO: thanks to the push rods, one can choose several forms of waves at the same time!

I appreciate the help guys. Voice 2 & 4 are my culprits. Local shop suggested an acetone wash on the chips. Anybody have experience with this or should I just get new chips from eBay and have them installed?

Do the acetone wash before you buy chips.

I have replaced a number of the clones...They are a bit different in tone so i would try the acetone.

I suggest to replace all chips. Last time my roommate had some friends 106 here with one broken chip, he just replaced that one, and right after everything was done and calibrated, the next chip failed.

I didnt really hear a difference with these: http://www.analoguerenaissance.com/D80017/

and it's pay 5, get 6, so I'd really order 6 chips...

Yes it's true you can get another going down..I always thought replacing all for clones is a good idea.

If you like the 106 enough.. :D

The video describing snapping the pins should never be done! I know de-soldering them is extremely tricky without the right tools, but save these old chips. If nothing else they can be sold on ebay or something.
