Leslie speakers? Sort of.

Why would it matter if a panning effect were analog or digital? Or are you interested purely from a historical perspective?

o.k. thanks Z and pricklyrobot.. i finally discovered the Boss PN-2 tremolo/pan pedal just today .may have to give one of those a whirl.. as for the digital/analog aspect,. well, i am well aware of the multi effects units out there but thought there must be a vintage dedicated auto panner of old, possibly in a rack and looking every bit the part with knobs and without a heap of stuff i am not wanting included.. : ] still interested in the evolution of these if n when i find any.. thanks for the replies..

Well, it's not vintage, but for deluxe with plenty o' knobs, there's this: http://www.4mspedals.com/panneur.php (you can get it assembled, or in kit form if you like DIY and want to save some scratch)

If you're not totally opposed to digital and want something cheap (you should be able to score one for $50 or less with a bit of searching), the Alesis Ampliton, which is a dedicated stereo tremolo/autopan unit with a decent amount of controls.

I haven't used either of these particular units myself, but I have used several other of the Alesis ModFx units and have found them to provide very usable sounds (though you may want to steer clear if you're looking for pristine and noise-free) for not a lot of money.
