Storing Patches on an OB-1

Post by Beerco » Sun Nov 21, 2010 2:27 am

So, I just scored an Oberheim OB 1 and managed to get the thing functioning. All the circuits seem fine but it had a stuck key that I managed to repair without doing more harm than good.

So now I got the thing running and man, this thing just makes some killer noises! This is my first synth with real knobs and it's such a free way to operate. My prior experience with analog synths was an Oberheim Matrix 6 that I bought new in 1985 - not a single knob or slider!! (I do have a Mackie C4 that I use to program the M6 now with and that's pretty cool but not the same)

With only 8 patch slots, I probably shouldn't even bother saving patches but I want to know how to do it. Does anyone know how to store a patch on the OB-1? I managed to do it accidentally once but I can't seem to re-create the steps.

Thanks,

touch the store (far right top) button until it flashes then with another finger on the same hand touch the preset.

A bit tricky at first... :D

A superb synth..though

ALSO...From Manual mode...Press Manual + store then wait for the flashing...Select preset.

Hmmm....Neither method seems to be working.

From "Manual" mode, I press and hold write and then the manual LED starts a rapid flicker. Without releasing write, I press e.g. program 2. The manual LED stops flashing and goes to solid. I now press preset 2 and it's the old patch, not the new one.

When I hold down write and manual together, nothing happens at all i.e., the manual LED doesn't start flashing.

Could there be something wrong with the write circuit or the chip perhaps? It did work once though.

So Manual + write ...Flicker...Take your thumb off manual to the preset...

It can be tricky.....Try it.

Tell me what happens...

When I press Manual + Write at the same time, nothing happens, the light never flickers.

The only way I can get it to flicker is to first press manual mode, then press and hold write - led starts flickering then when I press any preset button it stops flickering but it doesn't seem to write anything at that memory location.

OK, Sam skyped me and we figured it out, figured I'd post here for the archives.

To store a patch: using your left hand, touch the write button until the manual LED flickers. Now touch the manual button with your index finger. Now touch the program number you want to store with your thumb. Success!

If you have small hands, find a grownup to help you.
