Hi,
just acquired a FZ-10m. Display is sometimes missing characters or is garbled.
Anyone know the fix? Is this a common problem?
Looks like this: Broken FZ-10m

Re: Casio FZ-10m Garbled display
Yes. It's a simple issue - although not so easy to fix - requires patience and swearing and cussing. Its hard to tell from the photo but it also looks like the backlight doesn't work. Is that true? Have you had the machine for long?
If it's new to you, my guess is that some previous owner wanted to fix the dead backlight, which requires pulling the display out, taking it apart, pulling out the dead backlight panel and putting a new one in.
This is where the problem starts. You have to then get the back and the front panels of the display perfectly aligned when reassembling in order for the display contacts to meet properly, and then tighten the display layers together using the metal twist tags on the back. If the twist tags aren't tight enough, they can also make a bad connection and you miss out on rows of the display working. If you overtighten them they can break off.
Some people can reassemble these things ok and know how to get them just right, but sometimes its just easier to get a whole complete replacement display modulewith new backlight already built in and you just mount it and plug it in. If you do that, then you can try fixing the old display and put a new backlight in it without fear of stuffing it up, and if it works, you then have a spare, ready-to-go display for when the new display backlight dies in about 2 years time - that's about as long as I've been able to get out of my FZ.
Cheers, graham

Thanks for the reply Graham.
Backlight does work. Was unplugged in that picture. Unplugged it while handing the screen board. (To keep the high voltage away)
I was leaning towards the paper ribbon cable. Thought the LCD was soldered in. The metal frame is holding the LCD's contacts to the PCB? Wow that could get nasty!
Thanks for the info:)

Ya it's the same on the VZ series. PITA.
