Yamaha DX7 Power Cord

Post by Powelly » Wed Feb 02, 2011 7:06 am

I just picked up a DX7 for $50 AUD (I dont know if thats a bargain or not).
Unfortunately, it came sans power cable.
The plug as the back looks like this:

What type of plug is this and where can i find them?
Also kudos if anyone can tell me what this sticker means Image

I have no idea what that connector is but it's an after-market mod. The power cable on the DX7 is hardwired and I don't believe it had a voltage selector switch, either (at least not on the outside). It's been 20+ years since I've owned one, so I could be wrong about the voltage selector, but I'm 100% certain on the removable power cord.

Good luck.

After-market mod meaning someone added that socket and voltage selector. The original power cord on the DX7 is permanently connected to the back. It does not come off.

I've never seen a connector like that.

Ahh yes, I know what that one is. I have that connector retrofitted on my Oddy. It is a "Cannon" brand connector, Cannon is an Australian connector manufacturer that is known for making high quality audio XLR connectors, kind of like the Neutrik of Aus, though they've changed names now.

The connector on your DX is one of the unique and now very hard to find power connectors made by Cannon.

Doesn't seem to be any cables for sale at the moment though, this one sold not long ago -

You'll have to either buy a new connector and have a cable made up or wait until one comes up on eBay

(or at worst change the connector on the DX to a standard IEC connector, not a job for someone not confident with electronics work tho).

...By the way, $50 is a great price for a DX7, they usually go for about 250 to 300 in good condition in Aus, where do you find these bargains? ;)

...and that sticker is just an Asset log, you know like a school or workplace that has a listing of all the things they own and the details like make/model and Asset identification number. Just an accounting inventory record basically.

Probably came from a school music department, lets hope legally

I see, yeah schools and uni's are a great place to look for nice old bits of kit, mostly because they're old and they are usually happy to see it go.

You're in Melbourne is that right? Take the DX round to Logitronics and ask them to make up a power cable for it using an Cannon/Amphenol power XLR connector (they should know what you mean, if not they'll be able to put a more standard computer type IEC connector in the DX instead), they're pretty capable techs for old synths, might cost a few bucks but at $50 there's no reason to not spend a bit extra to get it going.

I bought one of these connectors a few years ago but I can't seem to find it on their site now, I might be able to dig up the part number if I can find the packet again, I'll have a quick look but I may not be able to find it now.

Here's the Logitronics site;

That connection is a Cannon and was used lots on all the BBC equipment at some point.

They did this to stop people making off with all the power cables as they could not use them. They are very hard to find now. I did have a box full but sold them all at £20 each

Best thing to do is get it changed or put a captive cable in

I am able to get one of those with the mains cable fitted. Just requires you to fit a mains plug

Its in the uk so postage will have to be added but total price will be about £30

It just wants you to put a wall plug on the end that goes into your mains outlet as it has a uk 3 pin fitted i think. It from a chap i know at the BBC. He has a couple spare

$100 is about £60 uk so this is much less!

It s there if you want it but no problem if not.. just trying to help out ;)

Would an adapter work?
And what about voltage?
