Latency issue with TB303 & Doepfer MSY2 sync converter

Post by davros303 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 12:21 pm

Hey there,

I've just acquired a TB303 and a Doepfer MSY2 midi to sync converter so I can sync the 303 to my session in Ableton, however I'm getting a severe latency issue with the 303. It's starting late, between 1/2 and 3/4 of a beat late after I hit play in Ableton. Also, the degree of latency seems to change between starts and stops. Once it starts however, it is keeping time, just not quantized.

I'm using my Novation Nio for the midi out signal, into the MSY2, and then from the din sync out into the "sync-in" on the 303. I've then got the audio output from the 303 going back into an RCA input on the Nio so the signal is coming into Ableton.

Does anyone know what the best practice is for midi to sync with Ableton for old analogue gear? Has anyone got a 303 working in sync with Ableton? How have you done it? What settings are you using?

Cheers,
Davros

My problem when trying to sync my 808 to ableton was the computer and the interface. The MIDI clock output is unstable and the converter lags behind slightly. Pretty much the exact same situation but with an 808.

Originally I was using a PC which would give wild tempo fluctuations throughout.

The only real options Ive discovered are;

to buy an Innerclock Sync-Lock which is much more accurate from what Ive seen/heard

to try some level of MIDI compensation from the DAW or

to just adjust my stems after recording so that the start matches up.
Come on Bennett.... Let's Party!
