control voltage and gate signal. pre-midi methods of controlling what notes are played and when they are triggered.

CV stands for control voltage - Old synth use a voltage which changes from the bottom key you press on the synth and the voltage will slowly increase with each key press upwards on the keyboard. The cv socket on the back of the synth is like having an external keyboard connected but instead it is replaced with a slowly increasing voltage to mimic what the keys would do.
The gate is like a switch being turned and and off or your garden GATE being open and closed. Again to mimic the key (switch) on the synths keyboard. The gate is the same whatever key would be pressed - on/off
