Simmons TMI (trigger - midi interface) battery

A long time ago my friend gave me a Simmons TMI that didn't store patches, but he claimed that it worked (it may have, I can't remember). I considered it dead, but realized tonight I might be able to use it so I checked to see what was going on inside of it.
The battery top had exploded so I unsoldered it and tried to run it without the battery.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out two things. First is, should this thing work normally with a battery unsoldered from it or would it freak out and not work. Right now it's not working at all. It's putting random things on the display and two of the trigger lights are always lit up. It doesn't accept a trigger and none of the buttons function.
Second, does anyone know what type of battery this uses? I want to use this thing, but I don't want to buy a battery for it and put it in if it is beyond a simple repair (I'm afraid the corrosion from the battery may have ruined some traces and that's why it's acting this way.
Kind of an obscure thing so google doesn't give many results.
