Roland JP-8000 Startup Issue

Post by marcusbrody85 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:25 pm

Hey folks, my band is at the studio working with their synths, and they have a JP8000 that will turn on, but won't make sounds and has a green bar over the top of its screen. Any idea what's causing this problem?

Thanks so much for any help!

Was it known to be working before?
Was it suddenly one day having these troubles?
Did anyone do anything to it?

Thanks for the help!

As far as we know, it was working fine. We were only informed of issues with one other synth. I grabbed a power cord, plugged it in, and got this issue.

Some things to check:
- Is sound coming from the headphone jack?
- Make sure the Local switch is turned on in the MIDI settings. This is default = on during power-up so this probably won't help.
- Sequenced/triggered parts won't play if MIDI sync is set to on (sync to external clock), and if there is no external clock/trigger signal present.
- If you're triggering the synth from an external source, do the transmit/receive channels match each other? You might try an external MIDI note trigger as an exercise anyway, just to see if you can generate sound in this manner.
- Has the display shown any error messages that you are aware?

My opinion is the LCD shouldn't have the green bar and may have an issue. Can you take a photo of that? But that wouldn't affect the sound output.

I've been reading some JP-8000 owners have already been needing to change the internal memory battery. The display will give you an error message 'low battery' if that's the case. Otherwise there may be some other issue a tech will need to look into.

Pretty much. If you missed this warning then that could be the problem. Garranimal, does Roland even have people that will replace the battery anymore?

Also, was this power cord the one that came with the synth? If not, that might be the issue. Sometimes they are picky about electricity.

Any decent synth tech should be able to do that, no problem.

Cool. I'd hate it if the memory on mine was nonfunctioning. I absolutely love it :D

Thanks so much for the suggestions folks, I will fire it up when I work on synths tomorrow and see what's going on. The power cable was just a generic one, so could that have been it?

I think in the US it's a typical 3-prong.
