Best way to clean outside of JP 8000?

Post by Hobbitrabbit » Fri Mar 23, 2012 1:03 am

Okay, well, basically, my used JP-8000 sounds awesome, but seriously needs a good cleaning. The dials/sliders are very dusty and the outside has tape residue and random stuff on it. Knowing the notoriously strange paint jobs on the JP, what's the best way to clean it without damaging the paint? I read a recent post on this but was unsure if using some of the methods suggested (like alcohol) would be a good idea with this think. Thanks!

I use 5 different products to clean keyboards with.

These are used in order to see what I can get to come off safely.

1). Water and then mild soap and water for "dirt". Use with paper towel. wet towels/Q-tips not keyboard!!!

2). Isopropyl alcohol wet towels/Q-tips not keyboard!!!

3). Windex (ammonia) wet towels/Q-tips not keyboard!!!

When the first 3 fail proceed at your own risk!!!!!!

For really bad parts it can be tricky. The blue material used on this unit is "wierd" but I think good looking.

4). I used VERY small amounts of De-solv-it (contains lanolin, and is bio-degradable) on a Q-tip to clean major dings, sticker or tape residue etc.. Goo-Gone would be similar IMO.

5). Goof Off on a Q-tip. Last resort and can cause surface marring issues. Use only for the most difficult dings/paint. (Goof Off contains Xylene and Methyl Carbitol). Works but can take paint finish of the plastic with it. Use on a Q-tip wipe on and wipe off Fast. Do not let it sit! Clean with Windex after.

The results I got are mixed.

For products 1-4 they clean off 80% of the time what I want to remove. For item 5). the paint/scuff I wanted gone was removed, but if you rub too hard you will damage the paint. So in short, if you would rather have the scuff than a spot that if you look close has a bit of a "smooth spot" don't touch it.

My JP-8000 had some paint on it (like it was bumped on a wall or a door frame) and I wanted the paint gone, so I was OK with the small smooth spot.

Enjoy!
