Oberheim SEM Patchpanel oscillator noise when idle

Post by volumetrik » Fri May 04, 2012 4:47 am

hey

I noticed that when my SEM is idle you can hear this very faint oscillator noise and if you turn up the mixer or monitors you can hear it more, is this ok?

cheers

That happened with my moog mg-1. I thought it seemed normal. Is it loud enough to cause annoyance?

I guess not...did you end up servicing your mg-1?

Welcome to the wacky world of analog circuitry :?

If you need it dead quiet, use a noise gate.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

No, I think that is just the way they are like meatballfulton said, it really shouldn't matter as long as its not so loud that you can hear it through your mix. If you have to turn your pa or system up to hear it, its probably not a problem. If you can hear it very clearly with normal playing volumes, it may be a problem.
My guess is that its fine.

Do you have both VCO1 and VCO2 saw/pulse mix pots totally off (in center position)?

when they are in center position, there is no noise but as you turn them the noise appears and you can hear it more as you turn it to the max

btw thanks for the help every1

OK so if by "noise" you mean the sound of the VCOs then it's working fine if you have the VCA On switch set to On. That makes the SEM constantly output sound. Turn off that switch and you should only hear sound when there is an incoming gate signal...

I mean when I'm not playing the unit there is noise when the VCOs are switched on..
