Ten Head Trauma's has left me dumber then before...

Post by caveman420 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:16 am

i have hooked up my Roland Fantom to my Macbook and can use garageband/audacity just fine.
My problem is that i can not figure out how to run Virtual Instruments. i am old. i used to have a mini moog. i would love dearly to purchase, load and trigger with the fantom, the VST.... alas, i can not figure it out...

would some one please share the trick to this procedure... Is there a player of sorts that goes between the roland and the VST... i have even tried to understand Ableton to no avail...

i am already with hair to pull out...

please, is there is one person with the patience to hold my shaking hand and help me figure this out... Here is some of what i do..

The thread title would make a great album title... not sure if I should be laughing though...

Buy an AU version of the plugin you want. That will run inside Garage Band same as all your other Garage Band instruments.

Start by getting the Fantom to control the instruments built into Garageband. I'm sure there are tutorials available either inside GB itself or at Apple's website.

Once you have that down, you can use other AU instruments the same way. Garageband does not support VST instruments.

Many people use the term VST to represent all plugins, but there are multiple plugin formats:

VST invented by Steinberg for use in Cubase, now supported by many other DAWs.

AU invented by Apple, supported only on Macs. Some DAWs (like Cubase, no surprise) cannot host them.

RTAS invented by Digidesign, used in Pro Tools only.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Jeeeesus, i truly didn't expect such swift answers. i am stunned speechless. THank You Both, Mad & Meat. I do indeed have the stock GB instruments triggered by the Fantom. Also installed and running is Ableton, but it truly confuses the f**k out of me.
Laughter is the best medicine and it is OK MAD.... Yes, i think the "Ten Injuries Has Left Me Dumber Then Before" is a very appropriate song title. Meat... i could not have asked for a more replete simplified collection of information. Exactly what i needed with this banged up gourd of mine.
i will proceed on and return with results, questions, and more song titles.

caveman,

Hang on a few more days. On June 21st (ONLY) Arturia will be giving away their MiniMoog softsynth for FREE. You will want the AU version to run inside Garageband.

Details here.

As far as Ableton, I can help you with that...PM me.

i have set my alarm to go of several times to thankfully accept Arturia's offering.

i will get the hang of this trip soon. GB is being triggered by the Fantom. i now understand that i needed a 'go between' to play the little demo moog .sf2 i got the other day. It is called Bismark. i got the bs-16 and plan to send the man his 50 duckets to get the nag to stop. When it opened up, in it's drop down file was the aforementioned miniM. Also i figured out the live instument record on GB and like a mac, sweetly easy with some puttering with.

many million thank you's until you both are better paid

Sagan Technology's Metro is a DAW that runs on Macs and supports both VST and AU plug-ins. I've been using it for a long time.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!
