G'Day
Hoping one of you guys/girls can help me.
I have a Yamaha TX 81Z which has been sitting unused for several years and the backup battery has gone flat, meaning its now lost the startup settings.
How does one recover from this and get it back in action. Can it be downloaded from the WWW? If so how do you then get it to the machine? Powers up fine so I think all else is OK with it.
Any help appreciated.

Re: Yamaha TX 81Z with amnesia
Welcome to the board!
Change the battery first. IIRC, it is soldered in - not a bad job, but don't make it your FIRST attempt at soldering.
Factory voices are here:
http://nuxmicromedia.tripod.com/cgi-bin ... mode=patch
You'll need to load them into your computer and unzip them.
Download a SYSEX program like "MIDI-OX"
Get a USB-to-MIDI box.
Plug the USB end into your computer and recognize it in MIDIOX (or other program)
Plug the MIDI OUT or "TO MIDI IN" cable from the box into the MIDI IN on the back of the TX
Read the manual of the synth to find out how to turn off memory protect.
"Play" the un-zipped files (s) using the MIDIOX program.
Should be all good. NOTE: I don't know if the setups are included in these files.
Good luck. Let us know.

Re: Yamaha TX 81Z with amnesia
Thanks Rhino
Ill start looking for a scewdriver right away, soldering iron may take a little longer to find, USB to MIDI could be a while. I will look at battery first, then at getting software/patches. If I get that far I will be after the hardware.
I will let you know as soon as I make some progress.
I appreciate your help.

Re: Yamaha TX 81Z with amnesia
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it possible to get the patches back by doing a factory reset? I mean, after the new battery is installed, of course.
On this great website, you can find the way to do this. Just click on the Firmware Revisions link. I've done it myself, and the sound were there without having to use the midi to upload them. I must admit that my battery wasn't dead when I followed those steps...

You could try it before unsoldering the battery, just to check if they do appear. Then you'll know if you really need the midi link to upload the original sound bank...
