Weird Audio Problem(s) Ugh Oh

Post by griffin avid » Mon Mar 18, 2013 6:34 pm

So, in the last week or so, I have noticed weird audio problems/anomalies in my studio.

Since plugging back in a microKORG, I noticed it was noisy as first with static and rumbling and plugging and unplugging the audio jacks seemed to remedy the problem. It was so consistent that I took to using the headphone jack a stereo splitter instead of the R&L Main outs. I just figured the main outs are dirty or in need of repair. Not a big deal since the microKORG has been re-removed and leaning up sideways in the corner (again).
Jiggling the cables makes the sound pop in and out. Thought It was only related to the microKORG, but then....

I bought a Radikal technologies Accelerator keyboard and there is a statiky rumbling on the low notes when I first play the synth. The high end of the keybaord and pitches do not exhibit this effect. And after a while it goes away. I don't think it can be "warming up" since it's not an analog-engine so I dunno. UPDATE: This sound is NOT being recorded so it seems to be from my (oh-god-no) speakers. And....now it's gone......

I have recently rewired and moved the studio around. Is it a cabling issue or are my near-fields failing or...?
I know my video monitor has spazzed out from having its cable next to power cables so maybe there's something there with the synths' power supplies and audio cables so close...

Any ideas?

Another cool thing I noticed is a red light on the board of the Accelerator.
I've never seen a synth open and powered on so maybe this is no big news to electronic savvy heads.
But to me, I never expected there to be lights on a board that weren't LED related.
And as far as I know, there are no RED indicators anywhere on the accelerator so what purpose do they serve?

So I see this red light in the crease between the keys and the housing.
Should I NOT be surprised?

FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!! Set your FX units to "WET"!

Yes, some ancient Korgs did have a led for each voice (on the circuit board) to help troubleshoot.)

On the Microkorg, a realy big problem today is the crappy plastic jacks the everybody uses. The atom-thick plating on the contacts wears off in about 90 days. Any side-pull on the cable can crack the plastic, or bend the contacts.
Best move is to replace.

Are your cables hosas? Those tend to go bad after a little abuse, sometimes go bad on their own after a while, but I keep buying them cause I can get 3 or 4 sets to one monster. Anyway, there are also lights on the old Oberheim voice cards too, don't know about the RT stuff, never seen any lights peaking through any cracks on my Speckie, but if it is a concern you should ask on their forums. Jorge use to respond directly if nobody else had an answer, but it has been a while since I've been over there.

Thanks for the replies.
:( Yes, they are the Hosas and I years ago I saw a bundle on sale, the one where it's a huge snake set and I broke the insulation and separated all the cables. :|

So yeah, replacing them is next. I'll post on radikal about the internal board light.

Update: replaced the cables with the better quality and all problems are gone. I explained the story to a friend and he looked at my box of cables and said " oh, those are shi77y cables".
