Synth Identification

Post by foxyfennec » Fri May 10, 2013 9:05 pm

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone can tell what the synthesizer in this video is?

Video with Synthesizer!

I'd like to consider buying it if it's not a hugely expensive model. My dreams of obtaining Moog Source have been shattered by the £2000 price tag.

At around 3 seconds is where you'll get a good closeup. I can't see a make or anything though!

Thanks in advance :)

That's a MiniMoog which will set you back $3k-$5k, but I doubt that's what you're hearing in the video since they're miming.

Who is selling The Source for 2k pounds? Here in the states, they sell for around $1200 which is around 800 GBP.

If you're wanting a Moog, you might look into the Little Phatty.

Looks to me like a MiniMoog. Good luck finding THAT for 2k Pounds!

Thanks for identifying it :)

I saw a source on ebay for $2999 with a hefty delivery price as well. That's the only one I can see on eBay available to the UK.

The main reason I want a synth is because of the Rentals who use a Moog Source, and the Mighty Boosh use synths for some cool songs in the episodes. I don't know if you're familiar with the Rentals.

Would a Little Phatty be able to cover all the sounds I'd want from a Moog Source and/or MiniMoog? :)

They seem to be more reasonably priced, and actually widely available in the UK. Like this one ending tomorrow.

I do really appreciate your advice, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to these things. I'm considering even trying to make my own using these instructions but I'm not sure if that would be a high quality sound or not.

Welcome to the board!
No implication that you are stupid intended....
You do understand that the mini, Source and Phatty are ALL MONOPHONIC - that is you can only play ONE note at a time. Nothing like the sound in the clip.

I suggest you look into an Alesis Micron or Korg MicroKorg. They are both going for about $300.00 here, and have 8-note polyphony - even have a built-in drum sequencer!

Yeah I know it's a mono :)

I meant just the main tune.

I'm not sure I'd want a polyphonic but a drum sequencer sounds nice.

A Moog Little Phatty should you get the sounds of The Source and most of what a MiniMoog can do (keyword: MOST). Geddy Lee of Rush is now using a Little Phatty to play synth solos that he used to play on a MiniMoog 30 years ago.

As I mentioned before, the guy in the video you posted the link to is MIMING and not actually playing the MiniMoog. The sounds you are hearing are most likely from software or virtual analog hardware synth like Rhino mentions. I say this because the heavy bass sound, to me, sounds like a "super saw" which is not possible on vintage analog synths.

I recommend taking a visit to your local pro music shop and taking a look at current models (and late model used) virtual analog synths. These newer synths are less expensive than vintage, more reliable and usually more capable in sound design and would be a great place to start learning synthesizer programming.

Best of luck!

When I first posted I edited to add "PS I know they're not actually playing in that video" but thought that would be obvious lol. The guy Howard Moon (Julian Barrett in real life) is actually a musician and wrote all the music in that programme. Probably owns and plays that moog :) I didn't realise they can't make such a deep bassy sound, but that's not necessarily what I'm after.

I'm going to see if I can try a Little Phatty somewhere local. I've marked this as solved but if any of you by some strange offchance know of a good place in Cardiff (or South Wales in general) give it a bump :)
