been having a lot of fun re hashing some early chicago house...

however i only have a 707 and a juno 60....

i feel im missing something in the hi hat section....the 707s are ok but not groovy enough.

i cant afford a 909 and dont want to sample as you loose the vibe/swing element.

was wondering if i brought a 606 would it be a good enough substitute....

any coments most welcomed.

The 606 is kind of light and skippy sounding. I love the hats on it, and the way you can layer a closed and open together to get a splashier, brasher hat somewhere between that still has a different tone to a regular accented closed. Allows for a lot of variation. The toms are a bit bland, but OK for some extra percussive thrust, the cymbal is tinny, the snare is fine but not heavy in the slightest, so it depends what you want, and the kick is nice and sharp but lacks boom. It's a fun machine to program, and of course you can clock your Juno arpeggiator from the 606 trigger outputs (which run from the toms).

If you see one priced reasonably, go for it. If you don't like it you can easily get your money back on resale.

Hi Nathanscribe....the only other convincing hi hats i thought were the YAMAHA RM1X very close to the 909 hats
but could make chicago house to fast sounding...and not being able to adjust the pattern enough.

i had a mate many years back who had a 606 and i thought it was lacking punch, but im not looking for the kick or snare this time...i do like the features of extra clock options....although i have a Linn 9000 coming.

there is a guy on you tube that makes good use of a 707 and 606 with a jx3p minimal chicago house..i like that stuff....

however i do know that the guys in the day used the 909 well, as you can use it progressively, in this type of music.
although i dont really want to have to buy a 909, i dont feel complete without one.
