Moving samples

Post by synthroom » Sun Mar 09, 2014 5:58 pm

I've got a Roland S-760 sampler with various media formats I've acquired over the years - Zip, Jaz, SyQuest... I've also got Chicken Systems Translator, which does a great job of making disk images so I can back them up on CDs.

But I'm looking to consolidate everything on to Jaz disks and I haven't figured out a way to move samples from one media to another, that is, copy the contents of say a Zip disk onto a Jaz disk.

I'm trying to avoid hooking all these SCSI drives up to the S-760 and then read and copy banks from one drive to the other... Does anyone know a relatively painless way to do this?

If you want relatively painless then avoid Jaz discs. ;)

It's 10x less pain than Zip disks...

Do you have a suggestion for a better media? Since the S-760 is SCSI, a SCSI to SD card solution is rather expensive. And then I still have to move samples around...

OK - I've got it figured out.

You can drag and drop the Performance file/directory from Object List window (the Zip disk view on the right side window) to the Jaz disk icon in the Container Pane (the window on the left).

Pretty simple, once you figure that out. I had been trying to drag and drop the entire disk from one to the other.

Anyone way to buy some S-760 zip disks with a bunch of orchestral samples? It looks like they were used in a bunch of films and TV shows - Nascar, X-men, Pocahantas, Jonny Quest and more.

Perhaps, but you'd have the advantage of still having all your samples after the Jaz drive is just making clicking sounds and refusing to work.

If you want to keep your samples on a Jaz drive you could cut out the middle man by just deleting everything right now and not have to worry about when the Jaz drive will do it for you. ;)

Well, sure, but the same can be said for any vintage gear. And it's a lot easier and a lot cheaper to buy a used Jaz drive than buy or repair a used vintage synth should something break.

And someday, even your computer hard drive is going to die, so backing up your data is the key to happiness.

No, he's referring to a known problem with Jaz drives even when they were new. That and CD burners becoming cheap are why they were never as pervasive as Zip and Syquest drives.

Yeah, the Click of Death. I've known about it since the late 90s - I heard them talking about it on The Screen Savers on TechTV. I miss that show...

That said, I've yet to have an issue with one.
