I didn't think the DX21 had an arpeggiator or any kind of rhythmic device, so I'm not sure what you're trying to do.
Now one fun thing I used to do with my buddy's TR-626 is arrange all the drum sounds chromatically in the bottom 2 octaves of a keyboard (MIDI notes 36 through 50-something) and program bass lines using those MIDI note assignments to play a bass line on my Akai AX60 in split mode, as I would play a lead line or chords on the upper part of the AX60 and use my Alesis HR-16 for the actual drum patterns.

You need a sequencer to properly sequence a synth.

Re: dx21 sync with a drum machine
The trigger out on the TR-626 is used to trigger drum synths with trigger inputs or to send pulses to a synth with arpeggiator with external trigger input.princefan3 wrote:Hi Z....I just want to be able to play the DX21 from a drum machine if possible..ive got a TR626 with a trigger option....but i suppose useless unless a synth has an input for it..?
I used to program a stream of eighth or sixteenth notes on the 626's rim shot to drive the arpeggiator on my AX60. We would also sample horn hits or 808 kicks from records onto a Boss Sampling Delay Pedal (forgot the model number) and trigger the samples from the 626.
But as pflosi already said, if you want something to play the DX21 for you in sync with your drum machine, you will need a MIDI sequencer. The Alesis MMT-8 is an affordable and easy to use sequencer that I strongly recommend.
