Low Korg Prophecy output?

Post by Alex E » Thu Aug 06, 2015 7:55 am

Just picked up a Prophecy but the overall volume seems very low. Has anyone else experienced this with theirs?

Compared to all the synths that I have used , Prophecy has the lowest output of them all.
A little gain from the mixer could help and since the overall output is not noisy , I dont see it as a problem.
Despite this fact , the prophecy is one of my favorite digital synths :)

Hi, I had bad left output on my Prophecy (cca -9dB than right output) and problem was bad elyts 10uF/16V on mainboard.
I changed all theese condensers and both outputs are O.K. and loud now.

You can try measure theese elyts onboard, because bad pieces has about 1-400 nF only

Hi and thanks for letting us know.
Hmm thats strange, I guess I am missing sth here.
Both prophecies that I have owned were definitely not loud, they needed more than the usual gain compensation to stand in the mix with other synths.
I suspected the mute output transistors but I havent tried replacing them.
Was there any leakage from caps? how many caps were bad?
Can you please define loud? how much peak to peak voltage are you getting from the outputs?

I had the same thing on a roland unit...
darn roady did not get the in and out thing on amps and gear!!
40+ volts on a 25 volt cap!!
they do not stand that very long!!
I recapped the output and replaced the final drive chip in both sides to match.
worked perfect then!!

I would signal trace the unit and use a good cap tester!!
or just buy a recap kit!!
start there then work back in the unit!!
shorted bypass cap will lower the DB on the output!!
or leaky one!!

a visual of the tops of the caps is a good idea!! see if any are domed up!!
or split bottoms!!

and yes some caps are better spec too!!
Panasonic high heat caps or computer caps is all I use here now...
black and gold color...
used to be the varta brand was ok...

caps are not just caps in the audio!!
and do not mix brands!!
what ever you change in the left ch change the same in the right too!!
just a tip!!

Just picked one up and having the same issue.

I soldered on new surface mount main outputs to solve the common solder breaking issue there, which it had, but the output signal is very low to the point I need to amp it +40db on the mixer to get a decent signal. But that obviously introduces a tonne of noise too, so would expect this is not right as a low output synth might just need up to +10db boost.

Headphone output is ok for headphones but similarly it is too low to use into mixer (it may be that it is supposed to be lower).

Will trace back through caps, would be good to bring this back to life.
